Holiday Travels: Over the river and through the woods to another state

2016 LA Thanksgiving Traffic

Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays are times of a great amount of travel in America.  If you were in LA, the above “holiday” traffic photo is not one that would put you in the holiday spirit.  Thanksgiving is the most traveled holiday and the Christmas holidays are close behind. It is a time for being thankful and a time to share gifts, stories and appreciation. With 49 million planning on traveling for Thanksgiving alone, we thought we would provide a bit of pre-travel planning tips we don’t always consider and hope we don’t need:

As one begins to travel, remember that you want to have your Healthcare Directives – your Healthcare Power of Attorney, Healthcare Designations (HIPPA), and Living Will current and up to date. You will want to make sure that you have the right people appointed in the position of authority. You will want to make sure that those people that you have appointed will follow your desires, especially regarding the difficult end-of-life issues.

Over the river and through the woods to another State?
You will want to make sure that your Healthcare Directives can cross State lines well. You do not want to have a Healthcare Directive that works in your home state, but possibly not in others. We never know when we are going to get sick or hurt. It may be when we are traveling or staying with loved ones away from your own home state.

You will want to make sure that your Estate Plan is current and up to date. You will want to make sure that you have the right people in the right roles so that the Trustee of your Trust is both competent and trustworthy and will follow your desires and instructions, not their own. You will want the same for the Personal Representative of your Will, if you use a Will based plan. (see other blogs regarding the costs, delay and publicity of Probate Court).

We wish you safe travels this holiday season and best of all, warm memories to enter the New Year!
